Show Rec!!! My Heroic Husband

The short summary is this: A modern businessman travels back to ancient times; he lands in the body of a man about to be married as a matrilocal husband into a family of cloth merchants. He then begins incorporating modern methods and ideals to help his friends and battle corrupt local businesses. Ultimately he becomes involved in the affairs of the country.

A more involved summary is this: What we really have is a writer who takes his beloved businessman/spy character and drops him in ancient time with a new name and face but all the modern memories. It's a weird twist on the from here to there trope. Ning Yi is marrying into a successful cloth merchant family. As a husband who is marrying in - he is expected to do the usual wifely things: serve tea, take care of kids, cook, etc. while the wife runs the business - which she's great at. But of course he helps his wife take over the family business, falls in love with his wife, makes all sorts of connections and eventually ends up being pivotal in saving the country.

It was warm, funny, touching, with almost Leverage like scheming!!!!

SHOW REC!!! Luoyang

Chinese drama "Luoyang" (2021) is adapted from Ma Boyong's novel with the same name, which tells a series of stories that happened during the Wu Zhou period where a group of people from different classes investigated the unsettled cases in Luoyang. Gao Bingzhu (played by Huang Xuan), a city official from the ghettos of Luoyang, was involved in a case by mistake and became a suspect. When he tried to prove his innocence, he met Baili Hongyi - called Erlang or "second son" - (played by Wang Yibo) a foodie and a scholar/engineer who was trying to find out the truth about his father being poisoned. The two cooperate and investigate. Si Yue (played by Song Qian) is a guard of the Inner Court with access to the Empress, who is from a prestigious family, investigates the original case and approaches Gao Bingzhu, both are excellent in martial arts and have wisdom to find information related to the case. These two people of completely different classes but they had to investigate together. As they continued to dig into the case and search for the truth, they discovered a shocking conspiracy capable of destroying the Holy city and staining the streets of Luoyang with blood.

This was a fascinating crime solving drama - the conspiracy just kept going around unexpected corners. There was very little filler or side story diversions, just a couple of grief song vid montages that I thought were a bit too long but that's all. And watching the romance develop between Gao Bingzhu and Si Yue was really well done. The second couple involving Hongyi was very much less straight forward - fans going so far as to speculate his character was asexual or at least demi considering how reluctant he was to marry and how he treated his wife - but the progression there, though occasionally rather uncomfortable was really well done.

I've watched a few Asian dramas in Chinese as well as in Korean on Netflix. They don't have the Hollywood vibe which is nice. Good storylines without hidden agendas.

SHOW REC!!!!! Detective L

Set in the Republican Era in Shanghai in the 1930s: An intriguing crime case emerges amidst the bustling city. A beautiful new graduate of the police academy, Qin Xiao Man, joins the investigation unit. The famous detective Luo Fei becomes her colleague and neighbour. Together they solve case after case with a growing conspiracy appearing.

This is really Chinese Sherlock (not Cumberbatch - more like Rathbone) and some of the are more than hard nods to the original. The romance is a SLOW build which is nice and there are serious thruple vibes if we throw in the coroner best friend.

I just don't know...... That seems to imply a lot more hard core action than there was. It really was very Sherlock Homage.

SHOW REC!!! Who Rules the World

Hei Feng Xi is handsome and elegant while Bai Feng Xi is majestic and unrestrained. Opposites attract as both are unrivaled in skill and intellect. Caught in the warfare and chaos of the martial arts and political worlds, the flowers of love begin to bloom amidst the blood that has been sacrificed within the last ten years. Trying to keep their identities hidden, they constantly have to be three steps ahead when dealing with much political unrest, betrayal, infighting, and the ultimate battle for the imperial throne. They join hands, seeking justice, while trying to calm the ever growing uncertainty brought on by an unseen malice. But will their love bring peace to a chaotic time and who will ultimately rule the world?

The male and female leads share a given name "Fengxi" which does make it confusing. These names are their martial world names or if you like - their superhero names They are Black and White Fengxi and have been having a playful rivalry for years - 2 of the top 4 martial artists in the world. They are even spoken of as a set "Hei Feng Bai Xi".

They are each royalty of neighboring countries who haven't seen each since childhood as royalty, they only know each other's superhero name. As the Imperial family is falling apart, the 6 countries in the Empire start gearing for a war to take over. Prince Huang Chao wants to rule because he cares about the common people. Prince Feng Lanxi (Hei Fenxi) also wants to rules for the same reason but he's not his father's heir.

It's available to watch on WeTV

And NETFLIX!!!

This show is a mix of political intrigue with an actual evil step-mother, the big hidden bad guy, an epic love story, a bunch of kick-ass female characters a massive spy organization, adorable and interesting side characters and some massive battle shots. It has it's problems including the not-surprising questionable CG. But there was money spent on the costumes, set and script and therefore is well worth a watch.
