A
huge lost media finding.
Turn-On is
(ta da!) the only American TV show to have ever been cancelled during its first episode. [
@atomictrivia: take note!] Aired once in 1969, the premise was that it was a rapid-fire sketch comedy à la
Laugh-In, but set in the indeterminate future and plotted and produced by a computer. (It wasn't, of course, but that was the conceit. It eschewed a laugh track in favor of an early synth riff which was supposed to be the computer laughing.) Watching part of it, it was clearly ahead of its time: the action is disjointed and frenetic on purpose, and it resembles modern TikTok or YouTube more than a 1969 TV show. I think I recognized Tim Conway as one of the only "name" actors; George Schlatter, whoever he is, was the producer.
A recent YT video on lost media has proclaimed that
Turn-On's first
and completely unaired second episode are now available on YT as of mid-June of this year. The means by which this was done are still open to interpretation, particularly in regards to its legality - those posting it on YT claim that the show lacks a copyright notice. As well, I can't imagine anybody is interested in doing anything with the property anyway after more than 50 years.
If I can find a stable upload, I will definitely put it up here.
