Making new drinks

Post by scooter »

First of all, on the ever-growing list of "things to do when this whole nonsense is all over", I think we need to have a get-together that features a pitcher of Bloody Marys. I am still working on the recipe...I do have at least one non-standard ingredient which I think "wakes up" the drink and makes it really taste great. I might add a second, depending on the type of tomato juice I might use. (One of my problems with tomatoes in things is the acid content. For some reason it comes off very harsh to my stomach...so I look for things that will buffer it a bit and balance things out.)

Second of all, I just watched the episode of How to Drink where Greg attempts to make his own gin. It is quite hit-or-miss as you might be able to figure, but one thing about it is that he goes for a very, very citrus-y gin, whereas I like mine a bit more herbaceous. And it occurs to me that KikisIslandLife has some requisite Everclear while CrazyCraftLady grows herbs right in the front yard. So this might be a thing to be explored, he said, with a look of pure eeeeeville crossing his face... ("They called me MAD at the Academy!! Bwahahah!!")

That looks yummy. Not necessarily gin-like, or useful for mixing drinks, but there is always something to be said for boozy ice cream.

I'm rather astonished that none of the British recipes involved currants. You generally can't mention any sort of sweet thing to a British cook without them wanting to throw currants into it. (Currant gin might not be too bad, but I think it would be too sweet for me.)

Still thinking I would go with Everclear to start, and just put juniper berries in with the mix. CrazyCraftLady doesn't seem to think so...

True! But maybe the gooseberries and elderberries maxed out the Britishness for that post...

Wouldn't you be flavoring gin with gin by using the juniper? But try it and see, small batches with both the juniper and the currants.

Okay, verdict on the Rosemary Gimlet is "pretty darned good". CrazyCraftLady found it good as is, but I think I'm going to back off on the sugar content. It's just a touch too sweet. The sprig of rosemary for a garnish should keep that flavor well in the profile.

It's mentioned as a "perfect winter cocktail" -- yeah, I can see that -- and I have apparently offended sensibilities by having it in the wrong glass (I went with an old-fashioned tumbler; you should be using something stemmed...I am filled with shame... :| )

I'll post a picture in a little while.

The picture as promised. Again, I'll probably dial back the sweetness a notch on the next one; I like the earthy and floral notes of the rosemary and want to bring them to the fore. Might mince the herb a bit before putting in the syrup as well.

I’ve drunk things you people wouldn’t believe. Whiskey and cough syrup on fire off the shoulder of I-95. I quaffed a glittering gin and tonic in the black light near Hauser’s Gate. All those cocktails will be lost in time, like tears… in…my brain. Time to cry.
