Let's be fair, here: the Hoff had the right idea. This was a situation where pretty much all elements of regular TV show production were subordinated to "wear as little as possible and run down the beach". Hoff & Co. recognized an easy payday when they saw one. "If we shoot it, we use it" is the most brilliant cinematography strategy of all time.
This has been another bit of brain shrapnel from...

Yeah, at one point she refers to Baywatch as "using the whole buffalo" and they definitely did. It's very much a show where they designed loose plots around giving the audience what they wanted. They upped the number of romantic subplots, action set pieces, cheesecake fanservice bits, and even had the occasional supernatural bit. They even did a very strange Gilligan's Island crossover.

As she also pointed out, the Hoff saved the show from cancellation after the first season by becoming an executive producer and jettisoning most of the old people. By the end of it, the Hoff was kind of dead inside and hated the beast he had created but also obviously loved the money. Baywatch Nights was supposed to have been his chance to stretch a bit but it ended up being part of the Baywatch universe, trapping him again. He had a really strangely successful career.

I mean, think about that as a career. You run up and down the beach. You get some bikini models and run them up and down the beach. You get some screenwriters from the local community college and you pay them in Dove bars because who the hell cares and then money just damn well appears. Then after several years of this, you retire to Germany and sing - and that makes you more money. Exactly where do I sign up for this? :wine:

Not to mention hanging around with a talking car for a few years and then later in your career portraying a parody of yourself. Ka-Ching.
