COVID-19 neurodegenerative component

Post by scooter »

Some exceptionally bad news for those following actual science and health news: Nature (and some other sources) is reporting that one of the effects of COVID-19 is the build-up of amyloid proteins on neuroreceptors, similar to the mechanism of Alzheimer's; this is believed to be the cause of the loss of sense of smell that comes with the disease.

The good news is that pre-treatment through vaccination greatly mitigates this effect...

I learned this on Quora through a medical professional in the field. I will include citations in the comments as soon as I can. The takeaway here would seem to be that getting vaccinated is very important.

I hadn't heard that yet. Since it's published in Nature it will probably be in this week's Coronapod

Oh, that's weird. I wouldn't think there would be a Covid-news-fatigue from them.

There’s not. Corona pod is their weekly CoVid podcast. This week it was on advances in tracking new strains through wastewater monitoring.

I’m sure they’ll run a story on amyloid plaques. The question is when.
