And by all means, ignore Rand Paul. I don't give a damn if he says the sun is rising in the East tomorrow - assume any damn thing that comes out of his gaping piehole is a lie unless there is overwhelming factual evidence to back it up. And even at that, get two sources, just in case. The man is a counterfactual vortex of bullshit.

Honestly, I see no reason to accommodate people who want to make every single fact "political." It's not. It's information about a virus, like any other pathogen we have had to deal with.

This sounds so bereft of evidence that it seems almost irresponsible to report it, but apparently this is being done and lots of theorists are taking unjustified victory laps.

Also: note that some things being true are not necessarily indicative that others are. It is basically true, for example, that China is very (and unjustifiedly, if that is a word) secretive about their labs - which makes conclusions hard to draw. And there is a possibility that this could be done on purpose. That can't be ruled out - which is a long way from saying it is evidence that this is the case. People seem to be going off the rails about this shit - which is why earlier posts said something about politics.

The basic upshot seems to be that more evidence is needed in order to draw a conclusion. This is a regularly occurring phrase in science, and it really confuses and angers non-scientific people who look on white lab coats as a tweed coat and a deerstalker hat and expect conclusions to be drawn in neat, sure, 100% defined forms.

FBI is now revealing themselves as the source of this information...they in turn have not revealed where they got it from.

This has all the hallmarks of a politically-motivated guess, based on something heard from somebody's brother's ex-wife's chiropractor's boss. Confidence is low and should remain low...and I don't see the FBI producing any science-based explanation that is worth heeding any time soon.
